  July 2014--135 Years of the Watchtower

  the first issue of the watchtower was july 1879, about 135 years ago.

  it is interesting to skim the first issue, as well as the letter that russell sent out to the readers of the previous magazine he was involved with, the herald of the morning.. as to the split between russell and barbour, while the issue over the ransom seems a contributing factor, the first concern in russells letter is a monetary dispute.. the early issues of the watchtower were open to many viewpoints.

  Woop de doo. The Seventh Day Adventists beat Russell to it, publishing "Signs of the Times" magazine since 1874 lol.

  In the mid to late 19th century it was high fever for millennarian excitement and fanaticism. This was a rather natural evolution of increasing religious sectarianiasm that developed after the weakening of centuries long grip of established religious authority, particularly by the Roman Catholic Church (which in many ways derived from the scepticism and disbelief generated by Darwin's origin of the species), from entering a new age of free enquiry, and the maturing of mass printing presses and cheaper, wide distribution of published material and the invention of the 'magazine'.

  have you ever seen the 'signs of the times' magazine published by the seventh day adventists?

  i saw one at my local take-out recently for the first time and had a quick flick through.

  i thought it was rather better the awake and/or watchtower!

  Reminds me, now that the JW's have their own JW study version of the Watchtower, it's totally idiotic to have both the Awake and Watchtower for the public. I think all the rebranding around JW.ORG may mean that very soon the Society will get rid of one public magazine, probably the public Watchtower. The "Watchtower" will eventually be for JW's only as their study (propaganda) version only.

  Have you ever seen the 'Signs of the Times' magazine published by the Seventh Day Adventists? I saw one at my local take-out recently for the first time and had a quick flick through. I thought it was rather better the Awake and/or Watchtower! And I was rather amazed to learn that the Seventh Day Adventists have been publishing it since 1874!

  The problems Bible believers have with Atheists is the burden of proof is on the Believer and we just do not have enough proof.

  i recently posted a post telling this board my athesit coworker stumped me with questions about the validity of the ark story and i just cannot stop talking to her.

  i love hearing her side and point of view which in the past i would have dismissed as "satanic" thinking.

  she has some very good questions and i am having a hard time answering them.

  Yes, time to grow up as a mature rational adult and just face the fact that all the miracles in ancient 'holy' scripture are nothing but superstitious fables, priest-craft to keep ancient, unscientific people in fear and submission. It's an age-old ruse that hundreds of millions of ignorant Christians, Muslims, etc still fall for today.

  i have become more observant at the last couple district conventions of jws faces and enthusiasm and it seems to be very somber.

  i remember a couple of years ago i was an attendant at one of the upper sections at the blue cross arena in rochester, ny and in afternoon session at least half were curled up with their eyes closed, some with blankets.

  the applause seems very forced and mechanical.

  based on this weeks congregation bible study in the "draw close to jehovah" book, jesus is not yhwh from what you read in prov.

  8:22-32. unless there it is a hebrew word snafu - at least verses 22, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 31 speaks of two people.. correct?.

  one reason for the dumbing down of the org

  a lot of us have said that theres been a dumbing down in jw land.

  its just not like it used to be especially a few decades ago.

  it seems to me that if jw are right and the end of the world is near, the spiritual food should get tastier and more nourishing as time goes on, but it's getting more and more bland and less nourishing.

  I commend the dumbing down, I think it's great.

  Jesus Christ's message was simple. It was simple but profound principles. It was dumbed down!

  Boiled down to the barest essence, religious truth should be nothing more than the golden rule.
